As April came to a close and the rivers around Missoula continued to fish well, attention naturally shifted east as the Missouri River took center stage for Missoula fly fishing guides. For about a month, it becomes the go-to destination. The mayfly action kicked off quickly, with some impressive browns found cruising the shallows early on. Cloudy afternoons brought steady Blue Winged Olive hatches, providing great dry fly opportunities, while sunny days favored the deep nymph game, producing solid rainbows on sow bugs.

Despite plenty of boat traffic, the fish remained cooperative, and the Missouri fished exceptionally well throughout the month. Dry fly activity steadily increased, and nymphing stayed consistent from start to finish. Flows ranged from 4,000 to 5,500 CFS, gradually rising as May progressed. By mid-month, the Blue Winged Olive hatch began to taper off, making room for strong caddis activity—especially in the canyon stretch. This weekend’s record-breaking heat is expected to trigger additional releases as high-elevation snowpack begins to melt in earnest.
Although the fishing this month was outstanding, it was a tough one for me personally due to health issues. I came down with a severe flu in mid-April that led to a brief hospital stay and a diagnosis of myocarditis. Because of that, I had to reschedule all of my guide trips—strenuous activity just wasn’t an option while my heart recovered. As anyone in the business knows, guiding can be physically demanding, and the risk was simply too great. I continue to work with my care team to get back on the water as quickly but as safely as possible.
I want to extend a sincere thank you to the incredible group of Missoula fly fishing guides who stepped up and covered my days on the water. I also truly appreciate everyone who reached out—guides, clients, and friends. Even a quick text goes a long way during difficult times, and your support meant more than I can say.
